"The first Applied Bio-Mechanics class ... was an epiphany and a life changing event in my career and personal well being. As a massage therapist, for 12 years I had specialized in deep tissue body work, "no pain no gain." Taking Ken's ABM class opened my eyes to a whole new world of body work. My clients have experienced more profound and deeper healing with longer lasting results. As for myself I no longer ask for deep tissue work. Ken's ABM treatments have released postural restrictions that I have had since childhood. My scoliosis is receding; I have more movement and stand taller. It has changed how I am able to face the world, with self confidence and a smile."    JV, LMT

Aquarian-Age Healing Bio-Mechanics

Applied Bio-Mechanics is a study of postural distortions caused by strain in the human body. It is a gentle, light-touch therapy that has been shown to alleviate pain and increase function and range of motion. It has been used successfully for a variety of pain conditions, including acute and chronic back and pelvic pain, cumulative trauma disorders, fibromyalgia, and headaches, as well as disease processes, such as high blood pressure and gastric/elimination problems. Soft-tissue contact is applied that affects the coordination and balance patterns of the body, including musculoskeletal, fascial, visceral, neurological, and other bodily systems.

This approach is different from the current usage of the term biomechanics, which generally is used to mean the study of mechanics and anatomy in relation to human movement. Applied Bio-Mechanics refers specifically to the work of John L. Hurley, who around eighty-five years ago coined the term Bio-Mechanics as the name of his therapeutic approach. Dr. Hurley used knowledge accumulated from his unique education and experience in both mechanical engineering and physiology to study postural distortion, the effects of various forces on the body, and the resulting strain patterns. His study was practical, with the intent to devise therapies that would specifically work to reverse strain patterns.

Dr. Hurley created a holistic therapeutic system, which he called Aquarian-Age Healing, that works gently with the whole body to facilitate the internal processes that would reverse strain and distortion and the pain and disease that often accompany them. Bio-Mechanics was the term he used for his primary technique.

Applied Bio-Mechanics utilizes structural analysis to determine the individual’s relative distortion (while standing in a set position in front of a plumb line, under the full force of gravity) and to identify a specific contact point that positively influences the distortion. With the individual positioned on a therapy table, specific areas on the body are palpated for distress (sensitivity/pain). Utilizing soft-tissue contact, the therapist works to release the distressed areas (strain pattern) and induce deep relaxation. When the strain pattern is released, the body’s ability to heal is greatly enhanced. This combination of structural analysis and soft-tissue therapy that works with the internal processes of the body is unique and generally produces rapid and long-lasting results.

Understand the relationship of distortion and disease process.

Recognize the detrimental effects of distortion down to the cellular level.

Differentiate true healing versus adaptation.

Understand stress-strain and deflection-distortion relationships and their effects on the human body.

Be able to recognize visible signs of distortion in practically anyone.

Learn to accurately measure relative distortion using a plumb-bob system practical in any therapeutic program.

Be able to locate distressed areas in the body using palpatory techniques.

Learn gentle, noninvasive techniques for releasing strain in the body and producing deep relaxation.

Obtain practical skills for breaking the exhaustion cycle and allowing rapid constructive changes in the body.

Learn to integrate this work with other treatment modalities.
